Volunteer Recognition

ALITHSA Volunteer Recognition Program

Glenn Riedel - U10 Girls Coach

ALITHSA would like to recognize Coach Glenn Riedel for his "above and beyond" volunteer work.

We took a few minutes of Glenn's time to get to know him better.

ALITHSA:

How long have you been involved in soccer and in what forms?

Glenn:

This is my 5th year, all as a coach.

ALITHSA:

What are the three top things for you as a coach?

Glenn:

No question my top priority is for the kids to have fun. It's the same for all levels but especially important in the rec league. Secondly, I strongly believe in equal playing time - both total game time as well as time spent playing the different positions. Also important to me is to teach skills and strategy to the best of my ability.

ALITHSA:

What in your view are the top three things for the players?

Glenn:

I laugh when I think how to answer this because I recall the times when the kids were more concerned with the bugs or the dandelions as opposed to soccer. With some exceptions, I think the players just want to have a good time, play as much as possible and of course... to score goals.

ALITHSA:

What can we teach our kids about playing soccer and who is your >favorite soccer player (or other sport) - role model?

Glenn:

I think we should stress more TEAM strategy fundamentals in the lower age groups. Even though it's not necessarily a winning formula in younger age groups (where individual stars can dominate a game), I think it will pay dividends down the road for the players.

I'm a basketball fan so I would pick Steve Nash as a SPORTS role model. He makes all his teammates better and excels despite limited physical skills compared to the average NBA player.

ALITHSA:

Please tell us about your most special soccer memory or event.

Glenn:

A recent special moment happened before the semi-finals of the Cary tournament. One of my players was not able to play but she stayed to watch the game from the sidelines. Before the game all the players went over to her to make her feel better. That was a cool moment.

ALITHSA:

How in your mind can we make soccer in ALITHSA as creative and fun as possible?

Glenn:

Actually I think the current set up is working out great.

ALITHSA:

Anything special you would like to share with all of us in ALITHSA about being a volunteer?

Glenn:

Well, I can honestly say that I was really surprised how rewarding it is to be a coach for youth soccer. I didn't really know what to expect going in and was kind of blown away by how much fun and rewarding it is.

ALITHSA:

Thank you Glenn!
