ALITHSA Volunteer Recognition Program
Coach Angie Berkhout - U10 Mixed
ALITHSA would like to recognize Coach Angie Berkhout for her "above and beyond" volunteer work.
One of the nominations she received said:
"I would like to nominate Angie Berkhout as an outstanding coach. Not only is she taking time out of her life to coach these young kids, she also does it with knowledge and encouragement. As a mother of one of the children she coaches, she has gone above and beyond her coaching duties and picks up my son for practice on a regular basis. Angie recognizes how important soccer is to my son, and helps us out with getting him to practice. She deserves a vote in my book!! Thank You"
We took a few minutes of Angie's time to get to know him better.
ALITHSA:
How long have you been involved in soccer and in what forms?
Angie:
I started playing soccer at about age 9. Growing up in California it was very popular and I was able to play up until I started having my own family. The last couple of years I have started playing indoor again. Coaching started about four years ago with my own sons.
ALITHSA:
What are the three top things for you as a coach?
Angie:
I want the kids to learn the game. I want them to have fun. And I especially hope that they want to come back season after season.
ALITHSA:
Any special challenges for U10 Mixed?
Angie:
Not that I can think of....I enjoy this age the most. They are ready to really start learning the game and many seem to make such big improvements while in this age group.
ALITHSA:
What can we teach our kids about what soccer means off the field?
Angie:
I think like any sport, kids can learn a lot about working together as a team. On or off the field, they will go a lot farther if they work together.
ALITHSA:
Please tell us about your most special soccer memory or event.
Angie:
For me, it would be sharing soccer with my family as a child. We all played, my brother, Mom, and Dad. My parents coached me for years, and as I got older my Mom and I even played together on teams. We were also big fans of our city's professional team, rarely missing a game. It means a lot to me that I can now coach my own sons and hopefully pass on a love for the game.
ALITHSA:
How in your mind can we make soccer in ALITHSA as creative and fun as possible?
Angie:
The more our coaches know about the game the more creative we can get with how we teach our players. It would be great to have more training for us, as coaches, so that we can improve the kids skills while keeping them interested.
ALITHSA:
Anything special you would like to share with all of us in ALITHSA about being a volunteer?
Angie:
If you are considering coaching your child - just jump in! I have found the families in our league to be so supportive and you'll never regret the time spent with your own kids.
ALITHSA:
Thank you Angie!
If you know of any ALITHSA coach, asst. coach, team mom, referee or coordinator that goes above and beyond, please let us know about it. We want to regularly recognize those that stand out from the crowd.
Please send your nominations and the reason for the nomination to mvp@alithsa.org.
